M. Night Shyamalan’s adaption of the popular cartoon “Avatar: The Last Airbender” stars 12 year-old newcomer Noah Ringer, who is remarkbly similar in apperance to the original cartoon character he will portray on screen, ‘Aang’. He even earned ‘Aang’ as nickname for the likeness, before hew as even cast in the film.
Ringer is a black-belt tae kwon do martial arts expert, so was ideally suited for the role in just about every possible way. He landed the part by sending in a home made video of himself practicing martial arts. His character ‘Aang’ uses his incredible martial arts skills to manipulate the weather and other elements.
“Slumdog Millionaire” actor Dev Patel stars alongside Ringer, in his first big screen job since the incredible Oscar success of Slumdog. Patel is also a martial arts expert, and has a a black-belt in tae kwon do. “I started watching it in my trailer in India,” Patel told Newsweek, who plays the villain Zuko, a “firebender” (he manipulates flames). “I see why the fan base is so big. It’s got action but a lot of moral messages.”
“The Last Airbender” is slated for release on July 2, 2010.
Will this film be M. Night Shyamalan’s redemption? Who knows at this point. “The Happening” was a disaster, but I still think that M. Night has a truly unique vision, and his career is still relatively young. He still has plenty of time to make up for the things that haven’t gone as well as he hoped. What do you think?
