How Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Would Have Continued

‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ producer spoke to Sci-Fi Wire recently about where the show was heading and what the plans were to carry on from the excellent finale episodes. The series starred Lena Headey, Summer Glau, Thomas Dekker, Leven Ramblin and Brian Austin Green.

Most fans will be aware by now that “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” will not be returning for a third season on Fox after it was canceled by the network. Some fans, and give them credit for their efforts, are obviously still trying to lobby various networks and studios to at the very least produce a straight-to-dvd follow up or continuation of the series on a new network after the Season Two finale aired earlier this year.

Speaking to Sci-Fi Wire recently, James Middleton who was a producer on the show hinted at possible storylines and plot directions, but also seemed to downplay the notion that the show could return:

I feel like I don’t want to raise anybody’s expectations about what’s going to happen with those characters,” Middleton said in an exclusive phone interview Wednesday while promoting Terminator: The Machinima Series. “I can tell you that I love those characters. I use a business term, and it sort of belies my emotional investment in these characters, but they are a great franchise asset. My passion for them is not diminished at all, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

The final episode of the series featured John Connor (Thomas Dekker) traveling to the future in which he comes face to face with Allison, the human who was the template for Cameron (Summer Glau), a Terminator sent back by Future John to protect him. The show played quite loosely with time lines and canon, but suggested on multiple occasions that it was possible that many future realities could exist - a point proven further when in the final scene, John also comes face to face with his Uncle Derek (Brian Austin Green aka ex-Mr. Megan Fox) who didn’t seem to recognize John, which may mean that John never became the same infamous man and leader of the resistance in this future. When asked directly about that possibility, Middleton agreed:

I think that that’s the right interpretation, because in the actual footage of the show, we see that Derek doesn’t recognize him,” Middleton said. “So, by jumping into this future, he has erased his existence in a certain way, and we see that. We see that nobody recognizes him.”

And on how the show would have progressed from that point:

We would have to have explored that if we did get a third season,” he said. “If we had gotten a third season, I should say, we definitely would have explored what it all meant, but I think there’s a great moment where we see Allison [Summer Glau], and John’s look to her is very meaningful. I think that also would have been a great thing in terms of dramatic potential. Like I said, the show has ended, and it would all be speculation, and I really don’t want to raise anybody’s expectations.”

The complete second season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 22nd in North America and November 30th in The UK.
