The Back Page: 23 News Items

No, this isn’t a sport section - The Cinema Post Back Page is a collection of recent news stories and links that didn’t make it to a featured story. We have 23 news items for you this week, all of which are after the jump.

This fascinating blog from Alexx Henry Photography details the process of making a highly impressive “living” movie poster for of all things, a Hallmark movie called “Mrs. Washington Goes To Smith”. This is an exciting design concept you can expect to see become more and more popular. Think of them as highly advanced animated GIFS, the aim is to make you think you are looking at a still image. They are the future of online advertising and design. Direct links to the finished product: 1, 2, 3.

The guys over at CHUD report that Marcus Nispel has replaced Brett Ratner to direct the planned “Conan the Barbarian” remake. Nispel has plenty of remake experience having directed both “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)” and “Friday The 13th (2009)”. Next question: Who will play Conan?

The very awesome Bloody Disgusting have a scoop on who is being lined up to direct the Robert Rodriguez produced “Predator” remake “Predators”…. Neil Marshall. BD rightly point out that Marshall was the man behind one of the best horror films in years, “The Descent”. “Predators” is scheduled for a July 9, 2010 release.

Check out the trailer for Charles Darwin semi-biopic “Creation” from The Telegraph. The film is based on the book ‘Annie’s Box: Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution’ by a great-great-grandson of Darwin, Randal Keynes. Paul Bettany stars as Darwin & Jennifer Connelly as his wife. The film explores how the early death of his daughter Annie deeply affected him and his views on religion. The film will be released on September 25th in The UK and may go straight to DVD in America. Lets hope that Director Jon Amiel sits down with Stephen Colbert to promote the film.

Rian.ru reports that “Wanted” Director Timur Bekmambetov is starting work on a sequel to the film and that Angelina Jolie’s character will be back. No conformation yet on whether the actress herself will return. Shooting is slated to begin in the fall/winter time.

Alex over at Firstshowing.net has a must see trailer for “The Cove” which is an expose of the Japanese agenda of capturing and slaughtering Dolphins for food, which is being fed to children in schools and sold to civilians, even though much of the meat could also be ridden with dangerous toxins. That’s let alone the fact that they are killing Dolphins in the first place. This shocking revelation first gained publicity last year when NBC’s “Heroes” TV star Hayden Panettiere was involved in a confrontation with fisherman in Japan. Officials later barred (and then lifted) her from entering the country again. The film will receive a limited release on July 31st.

IESB reports that Ron Howard is signed on to direct a “Stretch Armstrong” movie. You know, a movie about one of these. Head-to-desk. Repeat.

Remember the whole kerfuffle over the leaked copy of “Wolverine: Origins”, that got FOX ‘News’ columnist Roger Friedman fired? No? Well, all the better for you. If you do remember it, then you should check out this bizarre and frankly, batshit, turn of events at NYDailyNews. Apparently, Rupert Murdoch ‘leaked’ the film online and then Tom Cruise and his ‘religion’ forced Friedman to watch said leaked copy of the film. Or something. I’m pretty sure Mr. Burns Murdoch leaks plenty of things, just not movies. (via, and with thanks, to SlashFilm)

In annoying news: MTV reports that our number one choice for “Thor”, Alexander Skarsgard (”True Blood”), was so close to being cast that he even had a costume fitting and test. Marvel and director Keith Branagh ultimately went with relative unknown Chris Hemsworth. Check out our original coverage here.

Courtesy of Collider: The ever-awesome Michael Cera on whether the “Arrested Development” movie will ever get made… “I think it will. Yeah. I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I don’t think it will happen for awhile. But there is no rush. I think he should take his time. I know it means a lot to Mitch. There is no rush, really. I don’t think.”

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will return from “Casino Royale” and “Quantum Of Solace” to write the next James Bond film with fellow Brit scribe Peter Morgan (”The Queen”, “Frost/Nixon”). No other details are available yet other than what we told you last week about the possible Afghan setting for part of the film.

According to an interview Gordon & The Whale, Danny Trejo will NOT be in Sly Stallone’s “The Expendables”. In bigger news, he also mentions that he will be shooting Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” next month. At last! If you haven’t yet seen the faux-trailer from “Grindhouse” that this will be based on, then your life is sadly incomplete. Check it out here and achieve inner peace.

Pixar’s “Up” is on pace to grab second place in the list of highest domestic grossing Pixar films of all time by passing the $206.4 million grossed by “Ratatouille” in 2007, the $223.8 million from “Wall-E” last summer and “The Incredibles” at $261.4 million according to Variety. “Finding Nemo,” is top of the list at $339.7 million domestically.

Joss Whedon talks about the lower “Dollhouse” budget, The “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” remake, Summer Glau and other bits and pieces in a new interview with EW.

Are our moody ‘neo-westerns’ on the way out for a more traditional approach? Probably not, but the iconic Roy Rogers from the 40’s and 50’s will be making a comeback in a proposed franchise of ‘family adventures’. What is the betting that there will only be one Roy Rogers family adventure?

A trailer for “The Time Traveller’s Wife” starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams is now online. The film is based on the popular novel about “a man with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.” Check out the trailer here. It doesn’t look terrible, which is a pleasant surprise.

Bloody Disgusting confirms that the fabled “Akira” live-action remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio is indeed dead and buried.

SlashFilm posted an account from a reader who attended a test screening of “G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra” - and in all fairness, no matter how much slack you give this film before you see it, it looks truly horrid. I often find myself ranting about negative publicity films recieve from people who haven’t seen them, but I’m willing to make an exception in this case because the trailer and TV spots ARE THAT BAD. I guess we’ll see, but I’m already practicing my ’storm out in disgust’ performance for the screening, and I’m only half-kidding.

Risky Biz Blog reports that the Will Smith produced “Karate Kid” remake starring his son Jaden, has a new screenwriter in “The Pursuit of Happyness” writer Steven Conrad. That’s a smart move, but the whole idea itself still stinks.

If a sequel to the recent reboot of “Friday The 13th (2009)” gets made, then it could be heading in a chillier direction. Shocktillyoudrop spoke to producer Brad Fuller who said that they want to show Jason in something we haven’t seen before: Snow. He also near enough admitted that the film itself, was crap. Something we haven’t seen before would be a decent F13 film. Not since the real original anyway.

IMAX has reached a deal to show foreign languagae films in China and other parts of Asia, according to Variety. This also means that at some point we might get to see these films in America and Europe on IMAX screens.

The DVD/Bluray release date for “Dragonball Evolution” in the UK has been moved up to August 31st, 2009 from September 7th.

Okay, so that brings us to the end of the very first Back Page News article for The Cinema Post. Please feel free to send us suggestions, tips or feedback in the comments. One big question I would like answered is: Would you like to see Images and Videos embedded into this format? The only reason they are not for this outing is that I was concerend about the length of the post, but feel free to express whether you’d like to see that or if we should keep things as short and easy to read as possible.
