“Red Dawn” is an MGM/United Artists remake of the cult 1984 film of the same name which starred Charlie Sheen, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.

Two new cast additions have been announced for the update, Adrianne Palicki (”Friday Night Lights”, “Supernatural”) and Josh Peck (”Drake & Josh”, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”) join Chris Hemsworth who was recently cast as Marvel’s “Thor” for a planned film franchise.

Hemsworth will portray Jed Eckert (Patrck Swayze’s original role), the leader of the group of teenagers who band together to defend their town from invading Russian/Chinese forces. Peck will play the bad tempered and fiery brother of Jed, Matt, who was originally portrayed by Sheen. Palicki will play Toni, a tough fighter girl who is also the love interest of Jed.

The film will be directed by Dan Bradley, who was a second-unit director on “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “Quantum of Solace”. The updated screenplay is penned by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore.

The film is due to hit screens on September 24th 2010 in North America, and we’ll keep you updated of new developments. This could be one to keep an eye on, and I’m definitely interested in how Adrianne Palicki gets along. She has a lot of potential, especially for more hands-on roles such as this one, and her name has been floating around recently in rumors for Wonder Woman and Tomb Raider. This new film could be her biggest audition so far for movie execs.
